Callaway X Hot Irons and APEX Pro Irons Review

selectworldgolf.co.uk -

Once considered the apex, if you will, of the Ben Hogan brand, Apex forged irons disappeared from the market years ago. But Callaway retained the Apex name when it sold Hogan to Perry Ellis in 2012, and now it’s ready to roll out the next generation of these vaunted blades.

Make no mistake: These aren’t your father’s Callaway APEX Irons. Where previous versions featured a classic muscleback design, Callaway decided to go the cavity-back route to better appeal to modern players. While all the clubhead steel is forged (rather than cast), the body and face are built separately and fused together. Callaway promises great distance from Apex irons thanks to their decreased lofts and thin steel faces. A low center of gravity compensates for the lower lofts by lifting shots higher.

The Callaway X Hot irons are all about more distance. The styling is reminiscent of the Razr X and all the previous generations of Callaway's most forgiving irons, so there are no surprises there.Callaway has kept the proven features from these models in the thru-bore hosel and the Razr weighting on the back of the trailing edge to lower the centre of gravity.

This is raised up so that the wide sole is kept to a good size and goes through the turf well, especially from the rough and semi-rough. The main change is the speed frame design that Callaway say will increase ball speed by about 3mph resulting in a distance gain of around 7 yards. This is all well and good but it is the gapping between irons and to the woods and wedges you should pay attention too. Nevertheless, the fact you can take an 8 iron instead of 7 should help your accuracy.

When we tested the Callaway X Hot irons and Callaway X-24 Irons, the faces did feel a bit hotter and the feel was still very good.
